THE 18TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2015
22 - 23 APRIL 2015 / 3 - 4 REJAB 1436H
MISUSE OF THE TERM JIHAD FI SABILILLAH |
The purpose of jihad in Islam is to elevate or glorify the word of Allah. Any action carried out in the name of jihad warfare that may bring negative implications to Islam and its ummah is not true jihad. Therefore, the actions of groups that use the name of jihad and have caused negative effects on Islam are not jihad, because they have violated the concept and discipline of warfare in Islam, such as killing those not involved in the battlefield from among women, the elderly, children, and the like. On the contrary, they have committed the sin of tarnishing the name of Islam. |
Thus, joining militant groups such as IS and al-Qaeda is not legislated jihad. A Muslim is prohibited from involving himself in activities that are unclear in the name of jihad warfare, much less those that clearly can bring harm to Muslims. What is done by IS and al-Qaeda cannot be associated with the teachings of jihad in Islam and violates the understanding of al-Salaf al-Saleh. |
