FATWA CONCERNING THE DEFINITION OF ZAKAT RECIPIENTS UNDER THE CATEGORY OF AL-GHĀRIMĪN
The definition of al-ghārimīn encompasses those who are burdened by existing debt as well as those who are compelled to incur debt in order to sustain their livelihood. This includes those who are forced to incur debt for the purpose of basic survival on account of factors relating to health, education, natural disaster, and personal safety. The zakat management authority is obligated to ensure that those who apply zakat from this category genuinely fulfil the eligibility requirements and are not exploiting this advantage thereof.
