THE 72TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2025

24–25 FEBRUARY 2025 / 25-26 SYA’BAN 1446

GUIDELINES ON THE SIMULTANEOUS RECITATION OF THE QURʾĀN IN UNISON

1. Originally, the Quran was not recited in unison aloud in congregation. However, recitation in unison is permissible if the purpose is learning and improving the recitation, such as one person reciting and being followed by others, or proficient individuals reciting together for the purpose of memorisation.

2. In order to avoid misunderstanding that reciting the Quran in unison is a religious requirement, it should not be carried out continuously, but rather alternated, so that it is not regarded as a fixed stipulation of the Shariah.

3. At the same time, the simultaneous recitation of the Qurʾān in unison for the purposes stated above is prohibited if it results in any one or more of the following:

  1. Errors in recitation, such as skipping words or incorrect pronunciation.
  2. Disturbing those who are engaged in worship in the mosque, such as performing prayer, reciting the Quran, dhikr, or supplicating. Therefore, a time should be chosen that does not disturb the worship of others.
  3. Causing people to believe that reciting verses or surahs of the Quran in unison has a specific religious merit

4. As for the gathering at a mosque or any other suitable venue for the purpose of reciting and learning the Qurʾān, this constitutes a Sunnah that is highly encouraged.
