THE 71ST MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2024

RECITATION AND MEMORISATION ASSEMBLIES OF AL-QUR'ĀN

After reviewing the decision of the Perlis State Shariah Committee on 21 February 1993 titled "Al-Qur'ān Recitation Competition Assembly", the Perlis State Fatwa Committee has decided that Recitation and Memorisation Assemblies of al-Qur'ān or similar events may be conducted subject to the following conditions:

1. The purpose of the gathering is to improve the quality of Qur’anic recitation and understanding, and not merely to pursue victory or competition.

2. The atmosphere does not display arrogance or boasting in showcasing one’s ability to recite the Qur’an, and does not involve any disrespect towards the Qur’an.

3. No matters that clearly contradict the rulings of the Qur’an occur during the gathering, such as free mixing, wastefulness, performances that violate Sharī‘ah, or the promotion of anything that opposes or deviates from the Qur’an.
