FATWA ON THE ELIGIBILITY OF A BODY OR ENTITY (SYAKHSIAH I’TIBĀRIYYAH) TO BE RECOGNISED AS ASNAF FĪ SABĪLILLĀH

The category of asnāf or mustaḥiqq (eligible recipients) may comprise individuals (shakhṣiyyah) or entities (shakhṣiyyah i'tibāriyyah) eligible to receive zakāh for conducting activities aligned with the legitimacy of sharī'ah in the utilisation of zakāh funds.

Organisations, bodies, schools, institutions of knowledge, or associations whose role is to strengthen the Sharī‘ah are eligible to receive the portion of zakat classified as fī sabīlillāh, by virtue of their status as separate, recognised entities (syakhsiah i’tibāriyyah). The amīl must first examine and verify any such entity before recognising it as eligible to receive the allocation of zakat fī sabīlillāh, to ensure that it truly fulfils the meaning of fī sabīlillāh as determined by fatwā.
