Ruling On The Translation Of The Qur'an Without Arabic Text

THE 63RD MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2023
23 - 24 JULAI 2023 / 5 - 6 MUHARRAM 1445H
RULING ON THE TRANSLATION OF THE QUR'AN WITHOUT ARABIC TEXT
The Quran has been transmitted to the Muslim ummah generation after generation through tawatur (mass transmission). Its wording is in Arabic through various recognized qira'at (recitations).
Printing translations of the meanings of the Quran without the original Arabic text may cause confusion regarding the actual Quran, such that some may mistake the translated text for the Quran itself.
Therefore, it is prohibited to print translations of the meanings of the Quran without including its original text. If there is a need to print a translation without the original text, it must be clearly stated on the publication that it is not the Quran but merely a translation of meanings by the translator.
Similarly, any Qur'anic verse whose meaning is translated must always state in that text that it is a translation of the meaning or purport of the relevant verse in order to avoid confusion between the original text which possesses majesty and miraculousness in both wording and meaning, and the translated text which represents the result of the translator's understanding.
