The Ruling On Abandoning Friday Prayer Due To Duty

THE 50TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2020
14 DISEMBER 2020 / 28 RABIUL AKHIR 1442H
THE RULING ON ABANDONING FRIDAY PRAYER DUE TO DUTY
1. Friday prayer is obligatory to be performed by every mukallaf (person of legal responsibility) who fulfills the conditions of obligation for Friday prayer. Therefore, a mukallaf may not abandon Friday prayer without a legally valid excuse (uzur) permitted by Islamic law.
2. Included in the excuses for abandoning Friday prayer are critical duties such as security guards, healthcare workers, air and land traffic officers, military personnel, police, firefighters and rescuers, and the like who are compelled to be on duty during Friday prayer time and there is no other substitute who is not obligated to perform Friday prayer such as non-Muslims, women, or travelers.
3. A person who does not perform Friday prayer due to a valid excuse must replace it with Zuhr prayer.
4. A mukallaf must strive as much as possible to attend Friday prayer. If he is compelled to abandon Friday prayer due to a permissible excuse, he must endeavor to avoid consecutively missing it three times.
