Raising Hands During The Sermon

THE 36TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2018
8 - 9 MAC 2018 / 20 - 21 JAMADIL AKHIR 1439H
RAISING HANDS DURING THE SERMON
The khatib is not recommended to raise his hands when supplicating during the Friday sermon. Likewise for the congregants, as they follow the khatib. This is based on the hadith narrated from ‘Umarah bin Ruaibah, who once saw Bisyr bin Marwan (delivering the sermon) on the pulpit raising both hands (in supplication). ‘Umarah bin Ruaibah said:
قَبَّحَ اللَّهُ هَاتَيْنِ الْيَدَيْنِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا يَزِيدُ عَلَى أَنْ يَقُولَ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا وَأَشَارَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ الْمُسَبِّحَةِ
Translation: "May Allah disfigure these two hands. Verily, I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) do no more than gesture with his hand like this, and he pointed with his index finger." (Narrated by Muslim, no: 874)
However, if the khatib supplicates for rain (al-Istisqa’) during the Friday sermon, it is recommended for the khatib to raise his hands, following the practice of the Prophet (Peace And Blessings Be Upon Him), and the congregants are likewise recommended to do the same.
