Witir Prayer

THE 36TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2018
8 - 9 MAC 2018 / 20 - 21 JAMADIL AKHIR 1439H
WITIR PRAYER
Witir prayer, whether performed as three rak’ahs with one salam and one Tasyahhud (Tahiyyat), or three rak’ahs with two salams, is authentically established from authentic hadiths from the Prophet SAW.
It is not permissible to perform Witr prayer twice in one night, based on the explicit prohibition of the Prophet SAW. For one who is certain that he will be able to perform qiyyām al-layl (night prayer), it is more meritorious for him to delay the Witr prayer so that it may be performed at the end of his night prayer. As for one who is not certain whether he will wake up for qiyyām al-layl or not, it is permissible for him to perform Witr before going to sleep. If he later rises at the end of the night, he may perform voluntary night prayers, but there is no need for him to repeat the Witr prayer again.
