THE 65TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2023
16 - 17 OKTOBER 2023 / 1 - 2 RABIUL AKHIR 1445H
ETIQUETTE RELATED TO THE MOSQUE
1. Reciting supplication when departing towards the mosque as narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas RA who stated:
2. When departing towards the mosque to perform prayer, the Prophet SAW recited:
Purport: "O Allah, place light in my heart, light upon my tongue, and place also light in my hearing, and place light in my sight, and place light behind me, and light before me, and place light from above and from beneath me. O Allah, grant unto me light." (Narrated by Muslim)
3. Not hastening when proceeding towards the mosque. This is based on the hadith of Abu Hurairah RA, the Messenger of Allah SAW said:
Meaning: "When the iqamah is called for prayer, do not hasten towards it, rather approach with tranquility. Thus, whatever you attain with the imam, follow him. Thus, whatever you have missed, complete it (after the imam's salutation). Verily, each one of you, when proceeding to perform prayer, is granted reward as if in a state of prayer." (Narrated by Muslim)
4. Recitation Upon Entering the Mosque.
By advancing the right foot when stepping into the mosque, a person is encouraged to practice recitations according to the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW when entering the mosque, among which are:
4.1 Hadith of Anas bin Malik RA who stated:
"Customarily, when the Messenger of Allah SAW entered the mosque, he would recite:
Meaning: 'In the name of Allah (I enter this mosque), O Allah, bestow blessings upon (the Prophet) Muhammad.' When he departed, he would recite: : بِسْمِ اللهِ، اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ (as in the above recitation)."
(Narrated by Ibn Sunni in 'Amal al-Yaum wa al-Lailah with a weak sanad. However, it has supporting evidence from the hadith of Fatimah narrated by Ibn al-Sunni and al-Tirmizi. Al-Tirmizi: "Hasan hadith.")
4.2 Hadith from Abu Hurairah RA, the Prophet SAW said:
"When one of you enters the mosque, let him convey salutations upon the Prophet SAW, and recite:
Meaning: "O Allah, open for me the doors of Your Mercy."
And when departing from the mosque, convey salutations upon the Prophet SAW and recite:
Meaning: "O Allah, protect me from Satan." (Al-Nasa'ie, Ibn Majah and al-Hakim. Authenticated as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami').
In certain other narrations, it is recited:
Meaning: "O Allah, distance me from Satan."
4.3 Hadith from Abu Humaid or from Abu Usaid RA who said, the Messenger of Allah SAW said:
"When one of you enters the mosque, then let him recite:
Meaning: "O Allah, open for me the doors of Your Mercy."
When departing from the mosque, recite:
Meaning: "O Allah, verily I beseech from You, Your abundant grace." (Narrated by Muslim)
4.4 Hadith from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'Ash RA, from the Prophet SAW, wherein he, when entering the mosque, would recite:
Meaning: "I seek refuge in Allah the Most Great, and in His Noble Countenance, and in His Eternal Authority from Satan the accursed. When he utters this, Satan says: 'He is protected from me throughout this day.'" (Narrated by Abu Daud. Authenticated as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib)
5. Performing the sunnah prayer of Tahiyyatul Masjid upon entering the mosque. The Prophet SAW said:
Meaning: "When one of you enters the mosque, then let him perform two rak'ahs of prayer before sitting." (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
6. Prohibition against utilising the mosque as a place for buying and selling. The Prophet SAW said:
Meaning: "If you observe anyone engaging in buying and selling within the mosque, then say to him: 'May Allah grant no profit to your trade.' If you observe anyone announcing lost property therein, then say to him: 'May Allah not restore to you that which has been lost.'" (Narrated by al-Tirmizi. Authenticated as sahih by al-Albani)
7. Prohibition against attending the mosque in a state of foul odour. The Prophet SAW said:
Meaning: "Whoever consumes garlic, onions and leeks, let him not approach our mosque. Verily, the angels are disturbed by that which disturbs the children of Adam." (Narrated by Muslim)
8. Prohibition against departing from the mosque when the adhan is proclaimed. The Prophet SAW said:
Meaning: "When the muezzin commences proclaiming the adhan, let none among you depart from the mosque." (Narrated by al-Baihaqi and authenticated as sahih by al-Albani)
9. Not passing in front of a person who is performing prayer. The Prophet SAW said:
Meaning: "If one who passes in front of a person performing prayer were to know of his transgression, certainly his standing for forty (days or months or years) would be preferable to him than passing in front of one who is performing prayer." (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
10. Not causing commotion and disturbing the congregation within the mosque. The Prophet SAW said:
Meaning: "Let those among you who are mature and discerning draw near to me (when I lead the prayer), thereafter those who succeed them—he repeated this thrice—and beware of the clamour of the marketplace (within the mosque)." (Narrated by Muslim)
He SAW also said:
Meaning: "Verily, each of you is in intimate discourse with his Lord (in prayer). Therefore, let not some of you cause harm or disturbance to others, and let not some of you raise your voice in recitation above others." (Narrated by Abu Daud. Authenticated as sahih by al-Albani)
