Ruling On The Exchange Of Gold Jewelry

THE 44TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2019
26 - 27 NOVEMBER 2019 / 29 - 30 RABIUL AWWAL 1441H
RULING ON THE EXCHANGE OF GOLD JEWELRY
Gold in Islamic law (syariat Islam) is a ribawi commodity (subject to riba rules). As for gold jewelry ornaments of 916 / 22 carats and below, exchange transactions with differing weights (tafadhul) between customers and shops or between shops and manufacturers are permissible due to processing and forging fees, the need to ease transaction difficulties, and in consideration of 'uruf tijari (contemporary trade custom/practice).
Resolved at the Meeting of the Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu Perlis No. 1 of 2020 convened on 10 January 2020.
