Iddah Period For A Murtabah Woman

THE 65TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2023
16 - 17 OKTOBER 2023 / 1 - 2 RABIUL AKHIR 1445H
IDDAH PERIOD FOR A MURTABAH WOMAN
The iddah of a woman in murtabah (a woman at menstrual age whose menstrual cycle has ceased without known cause) who is divorced is one (1) year. The calculation commences from the time she was divorced in a state where her menstruation has ceased. If her menstruation ceases during the iddah period, then the calculation of one year commences from the end of her last menstruation.
If the cause of her cessation of menstruation can be determined, then her iddah is as follows:
1. If due to breastfeeding, then her iddah ends after the third purification.
2. If confirmed by medical experts as being due to pregnancy, then her iddah is until the delivery of the child.
3. If medical examination finds that she will no longer menstruate before she was divorced, then her iddah ends after three (3) lunar months, commencing from the date she was divorced.
4. If medical examination finds that she will no longer menstruate after she was divorced, then her iddah is three (3) lunar months commencing from the date when she will no longer menstruate as confirmed by medical experts.
A woman who is divorced must not intentionally manipulate her menstrual period, whether by taking medication or otherwise.
