Ruling On Insect Larvae And Their Use In Livestock Feed

THE 64TH MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2023
28 - 29 OGOS 2023 / 11 - 12 SAFAR 1445H
RULING ON INSECT LARVAE AND THEIR USE IN LIVESTOCK FEED
Insect larvae are maggots that live after their parent lays eggs. They live for several days before transforming into pupae and finally emerging as adult insects. Scholars differ in their views regarding the ruling on maggots; however, based on strong and clear arguments, it is demonstrated that maggots themselves, if without contamination by impurities, are living things that are not impure, whether alive or dead, whether in food or alone.
Nevertheless, worms belong to the category of living creatures whose habitat is typically in filthy, impure, and foul-smelling places, which generally evoke disgust and may cause harm to humans either directly or indirectly, such as carrying harmful bacteria.
Therefore, maggots or larvae that live and feed in clean environments are not ruled as impure. Thus, products derived from these clean larvae may be made into food for livestock animals whose meat is consumed, such as chickens, fish and others.
Selling animal feed products of this type is permissible according to Shariah.
