Ruling On Consuming Aquatic Animals (Water Animals) That Are Farmed And Fed With Impurities (Najis)

THE 53RD MEETING OF THE PERLIS STATE FATWA COMMITTEE / 2021
23 - 24 JUN 2021 / 12 - 13 ZULKAEDAH 1442H
RULING ON CONSUMING AQUATIC ANIMALS THAT ARE FARMED AND FED WITH IMPURITIES
1. Animals whose flesh has the odour of impurities due to consuming or being fed impurities or living in an impure environment are called Jallalah.
2. In this regard, aquatic animals that are fed impurities to the extent that it affects their flesh are included within jallalah. The ruling on consuming jallalah animals is a matter of scholarly disagreement amongst the scholars.
3. After evaluating and examining the scholarly disagreement, the State Fatwa Committee of Perlis adopts the preponderant view that it is prohibited to consume fish, prawns, or any aquatic animals whose flesh has the odour of impurities. The prohibition remains until the odour is eliminated.
4. It is recommended to quarantine aquatic animals for three days, providing clean food or none, to eliminate the impure odor. Once the odor and impure effects are gone—whether before or after three days—they may be eaten if harmless.
5. The ruling on feeding impurities to livestock intended for consumption is prohibited (haram). Therefore, feeding fish or other aquatic livestock with impure food for the purpose of consumption is prohibited. However, livestock feed contaminated with minor amounts of impurities is pardoned if it does not cause harm.
6. Aquatic animals appearing clean externally are ruled clean; deeper investigation is unnecessary unless impure traces are evident.
7. Sellers who know that their animals for sale are jallalah must inform the buyer.
