RULING ON WASHING CLOTHES WITH A WASHING MACHINE

Originally, clean clothes placed by a person into a washing machine are not considered impure unless their impurity is proven.

Clothes are washed using clean water and cleaning agents. Once clothing has undergone a purification process such that no traces of impurity remain—whether in smell, taste, or color—it is deemed clean. Shariah does not require one to overburden oneself by scrutinizing the cleaning process if it is proven that the washing eliminates all traces of impurity.

If it is proven that traces of impurity still remain after the cleaning process using a washing machine, then the clothes concerned are considered still impure. However, if such traces are extremely difficult to remove and minimal, such as traces of blood color or impurity color that cannot be removed, then they are pardoned.

To avoid traces of impurity in the use of washing machines, it is encouraged that a person ensures that the clothes placed therein have had obvious impurities removed that would cause other clothes to be affected by such impurities and affect smell, color, and taste.
